Its compact design and ornamental work reflect the silversmithing of small personal accessories from the early 20th century.

Silver matchboxes were common accessories during the last decades of the 19th and early 20th centuries, used to store matches and protect them from moisture. Models decorated with cartouches allowed for the incorporation of initials or monograms, turning an everyday object into a personal accessory. This type is especially linked to late Victorian and Edwardian silversmithing, and currently forms part of the collecting of small antique silver objects.

Style: Edwardian, with Rococo-inspired ornamentation

Decoration/Motif: Guilloché-style geometric engraving, plain central cartouche, scrolls and floral motifs

Period/Dating: Early 20th century, ca. 1900–1915

Origin: Europe

Hallmarked: Yes

Materials: Hallmarked silver

Hallmarks/Punches: Punches present on both sides of the inner edge; barely visible, without conclusive identification

Dimensions: 5 cm x 3.4 cm x 1.1 cm

Weight: 16.99 g

These items are not new; they show signs of wear and may have scratches and imperfections inherent to their age and use.
