These containers contain two types of oil: Chrism, a mixture of olive oil and balm that symbolizes strength and the Christian life, and Holy Oil or Holy Oil, used in baptisms or the Anointing of the Sick. The chrysmeras are engraved with the initials OS for Óleo Santo and SC for Sagrado Crisma. The abbreviation "SCR" on a chrismera probably indicates "Sacred Reserved Chrism," suggesting that it is saved for special ceremonies, such as the consecration of oil paintings during Holy Week.
