Antique Belle Époque 800 silver mesh bag, with an elaborate ornamental composition that reproduces the effects of textile passementerie in metal. Its body is made with a dense weave of small articulated links, with great flexibility and drape, combining different decorative arrangements. The upper part features three stepped motifs of vertical fringes, adorned with rows of small spheres and finished with hanging tassels. A dense curtain of fine chains runs along the lower edge, extending the movement of the mesh. The rigid frame, decorated with a delicate border of flowers and raised plant motifs, incorporates a double-ball clasp and a suspension chain of elongated links. The richness of the design lies in the combination of a regular-weave mesh with three-dimensional ornamentation that provides volume, texture, and movement.
Silver mesh bags were appreciated accessories in late 19th-century and early 20th-century women's fashion, especially for social occasions, visits, and celebrations. This example stands out within its typology for the metallic interpretation of passementerie trimmings, a technique that brought the fringes, tassels, and festoons typical of textile clothing accessories to goldsmithing. The symmetrical arrangement of its three ornamental motifs, the floral frame, and the drape of its fringes reflect the decorative taste of the Belle Époque and its transition toward the fashions of the early 20th century. Its format and construction correspond to a handbag, more elaborate than small plain mesh purses.

Patina and cleaning
Many pieces have a patina as a natural consequence of the passage of time. We do not remove it, as it may have taken decades to form and, in many cases, contributes to the character and appearance of the piece.
If you decide to clean or polish a piece, do so with caution and keeping the material in mind. Improper cleaning can alter its surface, patina, appearance, and in some cases, its value. If you need guidance on cleaning a specific material, contact us and we will help you.
