Antique rectangular metal and black enamel brooch with a classic female scene and Neoclassical decoration.
The central figure depicts a possible nymph, young woman, or mythological allegory in a reclining position, dressed in Greco-Roman inspired garments. She interacts with a bird in mid-flight via a thread or ribbon, a motif associated in nineteenth-century symbolism with innocence, the wandering soul, free love, or sentimental messages. The frame incorporates a Greek fret motif and pierced sides, elements characteristic of Neoclassical taste and the classical revival of the late 19th century.
