Victorian Virgin Mary locket pendant, antique religious medallion in black enamel, Circa 1900.
Out of stock
Oval Victorian reliquary, circa 1890-1900, made of black enameled metal with a brass figure of the Virgin Mary. The interior contains a small print on a purple textile background.
The frame consists of a lacquered metal medallion, possibly made of enameled iron or painted brass. The frontal figure of the praying Virgin Mary is applied in bas-relief with defined details in a copper or brass alloy. Inside, the image is protected by convex glass and lined with purple fabric. The original chain is made of gilded links in the shape of a clover or stylized cross with a tubular clasp.
This type of religious jewelry was common in private devotional contexts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Reliquaries were used to hold small relics, medals, or sacred images. The use of black enamel is associated with mourning or spiritual contemplation, very characteristic of the pious aesthetic of the Victorian era.
This piece is ideal for collecting religious iconography, for personal devotion, or as a symbolic accessory. It can be incorporated into understated outfits or worn as a piece of jewelry with testimonial and spiritual value.
