Antique art nouveau gilt locket, 1/4 cq&r gold, sentimental jewel, circa
Out of stock
Antique locket manufactured by CQ&R. Caro, Quint & Reichel (CQ&R.) in 1/4 gold plating, with calligraphic engraving "MRS". Sentimental piece, circa 1895-1910, Victorian-Art Nouveau transition period.
This medallion captures the spirit of two eras: the understated romanticism of the Victorian period and the organic fluidity of the emerging Art Nouveau. Manufactured by the American firm CQ&R (Caro, Quint & Reichel), which operated in Providence, Rhode Island, between 1890 and 1915, it bears the internal stamp "1/4 GOLD," indicating that one-quarter of its thickness is coated with gold, a technique known as gold plating, prized for its durability and quality in fine jewelry of the time.
The pendant features a delicate engraving of the initials "MRS" intertwined in an elegant calligraphic style typical of the early 20th century. These initials not only represent a person but also evoke the intimate and symbolic nature of this type of jewelry: they were used to hold portraits, locks of hair, or personal messages.
The interior retains its original ring and compartment, ready to hold a portrait or personal heirloom. The reverse is completely plain.
This type of medallion was considered a keepsake, given as a gift for engagements, mourning, or significant moments of love. Its understated yet profoundly poetic design makes it a jewel full of emotion, history, and elegance.
