Antique religious medal in openwork gilt cross with chalice, circa 1920

Out of stock

French religious medal from the 1920s with an openwork cross design and a central chalice in relief, made of gilt metal. A devotional piece in the Art Nouveau style, shaped like a quatrefoil cross.

This type of medal was common as a First Communion memento or Eucharistic symbol. The chalice with the host represents the sacrament and is framed by a quatrefoil cross, a symbol of spiritual protection. The decorative perforations and embossed details recall the ornamental influence of Art Nouveau, which was still prevalent in France in the 1920s. Its shape also evokes the trefoil, associated with the Holy Trinity.
