Antique cufflinks made of Toledo gold, a technique called damascene, a craft that consists of making figures and drawings by inlaid with gold and silver threads and sheets of steel or iron, usually blued.

The damascening process involves lightly etching the design with a pencil-like tool into the steel surface of the chosen object. The gold wire is placed inside the rough edges raised by chiseling or engraving. This burr is then worked downwards to hold the inlay, forming a delicate, intricate pattern against the contrasting black background.
