Vesta matchbox or case in solid French silver, signed by the renowned silversmith Charles Murat, a leading figure of French Art Nouveau. The piece features an exquisite high-relief design with lily of the valley motifs, a flower associated in France with good luck and love.
Rectangular in shape with a hinged lid, the case retains its French seals, including the rhomboidal seal with the silversmith's initials (CM), as well as the inscription "DEPOSÉ", which guarantees the protection of the design.
This object was created around 1900, during the Belle Époque, and reflects the fusion of functionality and art that characterized personal accessories of the time. It was originally used to protect matches from friction, preventing them from accidentally igniting.
