Antique French liturgical chrismera, made of high-grade silver (HFS), with a trilobed cross and the inscription "OI" (Oleum Infirmorum). A collector's item with a hallmark on the cross and ceremonial design, circa 1940.
This small, sturdy vessel was used to contain the holy oil, consecrated and reserved for the rite of the anointing of the sick, one of the oldest sacraments of the Catholic Church. It is a portable ceremonial vessel, intended to accompany the priest in his spiritual work outside the church.
With a cylindrical body and sober lines, it retains a patina reminiscent of its period and use. At the top, a trilobed cross rises, a symbol of the Holy Trinity, while the "OI" engraving clearly indicates its sacred purpose. The lid guaranteed the preservation of the consecrated oil during transfers.
Its workmanship is firm and precise, and it bears a visible Minerva hallmark with the number 1 and FFB (French Fine Silver), a signature that appears on other mid-20th-century European liturgical objects. Since 1838, the head of Minerva has been used as a silver hallmark in France.
Pieces bearing the Minerva hallmark with the number 1 (near the forehead) are .950 quality and can be considered sterling silver. The balance between functionality and symbolism makes this piece an object of contemplation, collection, or ritual use.
Ideal for collectors of sacred art, devotees, priests, or as a decorative piece on personal altars or spaces filled with mysticism and history.
