Antique brooch of French origin with the fleur-de-lis carved on a piece of mother-of-pearl, high-quality craftsmanship from the late 19th century.
The fleur-de-lys became popular as a symbol of the French monarchy in European heraldry beginning in the 12th century, representing purity, nobility and dignity. Additionally, it has been associated with the Virgin Mary in Christian iconography. In French culture, the fleur-de-lis is a national emblem present on shields, flags and official emblems. Curiously, it is also the emblem of the city of Florence, Italy, and New Orleans, United States, reflecting the French influence in both cities.
