Antique locket made by CQ&R. Caro, Quint & Reichel (CQ&R.) in 1/4-carat gold plating, engraved with "MRS." Sentimental piece, circa 1895-1910, Victorian-Art Nouveau transitional period.
This locket captures the spirit of two eras: the restrained romanticism of the Victorian era and the organic fluidity of the nascent Art Nouveau. Manufactured by the American firm of CQ&R (Caro, Quint & Reichel), which operated in Providence, Rhode Island, from 1890 to 1915, it bears the interior hallmark "1/4 GOLD," indicating that one-quarter of its thickness is covered with gold, a technique known as gold plating, prized for its durability and quality in fine jewelry of the period.
The pendant features a delicate engraving of the initials "MRS" intertwined in an elegant calligraphic style typical of the turn of the century. These initials not only represent a person but also evoke the intimate and symbolic nature of this type of jewelry: they were used to hold portraits, locks of hair, or intimate messages.
The interior retains its original ring and compartment, ready to house a portrait or personal heirloom. The reverse is completely smooth.
This type of locket was considered a keepsake, given for engagements, mourning, or important moments of love. Its simple yet deeply poetic design makes it a jewel filled with emotion, history, and elegance.
