Oriental-style Japanese cigarette case, manufactured in the 1930s. The piece is made of matte black enameled metal and decorated with elaborate 24-karat gold leaf engraving, a technique known as damascening or kinpaku, very common in artistic souvenirs from the interwar period.
The main cover features a Japanese architectural landscape with torii, temples, bridges, and Mount Fuji in the background. The reverse depicts a crane or bird of paradise flying among bamboo stalks, a common motif in Japanese decorative arts for its symbolism of longevity. Both sides are framed with fine gold-engraved borders.
The interior features two elastic metal straps to hold cigarettes or other flat objects. The closure is a fully functional snap-tab in the center. The case is marked "K24," indicating 24-karat gold plating.
This is an ideal piece for collectors of oriental, art deco, or historical graphic design objects. It can be used as a card holder, display box, or decorative piece. An ideal gift for collectors.
