Antique silver snuff box with deer hunting scene
This antique tobacco box, known as a “tabaquera”, is an exquisite piece of sterling silver dating from the year 1862. Of Austrian origin, as indicated by its contrasting punching and the year marked inside, this box is of good quality. quality. size and is highly decorated, reflecting the manufacturing skill and art of the time.
The box is adorned with a beautiful traditional deer hunting scene, which gives it a special charm and makes it a piece of interest for collectors and history lovers. On the reverse there is an inscription that reads: "HIRSIGER, CAMPANE BELLE - VUE YVERDON". This inscription is in French, which suggests that it could have been commissioned by Austrian silversmiths and leads us to think that it could have belonged to a French-speaking person, either a Frenchman or a French-speaking Swiss.
Yverdon-les-Bains, mentioned in the inscription, is a town in Switzerland known for its scenic beauty. This indicates that, although the box was made in Austria, it probably commemorates a hunting scene that took place in Switzerland, or may have been specially commissioned for someone with ties to that Swiss region.
The case material is sterling silver, ensuring its quality and durability. The detailed hunting scene not only adds aesthetic value, but also provides a glimpse into 19th century hunting practices and traditions.
The box can be encompassed within the late Biedermeier style, characterized by its elegant simplicity and attention to functionality, which was still influential in Austria in the mid-19th century.
Perfect for antique collectors and those interested in historical pieces with a European connection.
