A highly collectible silver vinaigrette, by silversmith George Unite, of Birmingham, England.

Vinaigrettes, used for smelling salts, became popular in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, and their origins date back to the Romans. They were used as a fashion accessory for personal hygiene and their aromas were believed to protect against diseases. Made of sterling silver, they were prized for their beauty and detail.

This fragrance box is of authentic quality and is engraved. Its interior is made of gilded silver with an exquisite, finely openwork foliate grill.
